The Iraqi Women’s League
Founded 59 years ago, this organization based in Iraq has been fighting to improve women’s condition in Iraq.
To mark International Women’s day and the constant work to defend women’s rights, which organisations such as the Iraqi Women’s League have continued to promote all over the world, a musical event will be held at Bolivar Hall in London on the 18th of March.
A selection of the best Iraqi musicians will take part alongside international musicians of Latin American Origin, Adean music will be represented by el Movimiento Cultural Amigo Artista and also there will be African rhythms from the dance troop Healthier life 4 You. The Iraqi artists that will perform on the 18th of March are Kyam Allami, a young maestro Ud (Middle Eastern lute) player, who has already participated in prominent events such as the BBC Proms; The flautist Suzan Khalid and Al-Heawa, a group that performs traditional dances from Iraq.
Since being founded in 1952, the IWL, an organisation for the defence of women’s rights in Iraq, which is the oldest suchlike organisation in this Middle Eastern country, is independent from the ruling powers and from political parties, has played an important role in the fight against the tyranny and the repression of the Iraqi authorities.
In several cases they have done so under the indifference or conspiratorial gaze of western governments. Throughout almost 60 years, many of its members have been executed, have suffered persecution, have disappeared, been tortured and raped for the mere fact they belong to this organisation.
In the past few years, IWL has backed campaigns against the military activities that have taken place in the country as a consequence of the War started by the USA and have carried out initiatives to eradicate gender violence. The funds raised during the event to be held on 18th March will be donated to the IWL to support this organisation’s projects for women and children in Iraq.
